Understanding Child Support Calculations

In Nevada, child support is determined based on the guidelines established within the Nevada Administrative Code. Low income support obligations, as of 2024, is based upon the 2024 low income schedule support schedule which this calculator uses. The threshold for low income is determined by the annual federal poverty guidelines that as of 2024 set the threshold at a gross monthly income under $1884.00. Non-low income obligations are determined by the percentage guidelines defined within NAC 425.140.

How the Calculator Works

The Calculator uses 2024 percentages for both low income and non-low income earners and takes into account the following to compute the Nevada Child Support guidelines obligation:

  • Gross Monthly Income: This is the total income earned by the parent before any deductions. Gross monthly income for Nevada child support purposes is defined by NAC 425.025
  • Number of Children: This is the number of children which require support per NAC 425.160, and this typically applies to children prior to them reaching 18 years of age or 19 if they’re still enrolled in high school.
  • Custody Type: This is whether the custody arrangement is primary or joint. Based on the Rivero case joint custody requires a parent to have physical custody of the child or children at least 40% of the time. When parents share joint custody of the children the child support obligations are offset, which this calculator supports. There is a scenario where parents have multiple children with differing custody arrangements, where maybe one child is primary custody and a second joint or shared. The calculator currently does not support that type of custody scenario.

How Your Obligation Can Differ (Up or Down) From the Calculated Guidelines

The calculator provides the Nevada guidelines child support amount calculated solely from gross monthly income. This amount is the presumed correct default amount. However, the actual child support amount required can be adjusted up or down according to the specific needs of a child and the economic circumstances of the parties. Enumerated examples are included within NAC 425.150 and can include items such as child care expenses, benefits received by the child or special educational needs of the child.
